In order to
meet the information needs of individuals from minority
ethnic
communities and in line with Section 75 and Schedule 9 of
the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (which requires public organisations
in carrying out their duties to have due regard to the need
to promote equality of opportunity between persons of
different
religious belief, political opinion, racial group, age, marital
status or sexual orientation), the HPA has produced several
of its public information resources in a number of regional
or minority ethnic languages.
The Agency recognises
that language and communication difficulties can be a barrier
to health and where possible alternative formats of our resources
are offered.
To date the
Agency has produced resources in Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese,
Hindi,
Irish, Portuguese, Urdu, Braille and in audio cassette formats
for individuals with visual impairments and for individuals
from the travelling
community.
The HPA has contact
with several ethnic minority community groups for the purpose
