No Smoking Day

Date:
The second Wednesday in March each year.

Primary target group:
Smokers

Secondary target group:
Smokers' family and friends and health professionals.

Aim:
To encourage smokers to make a quit attempt on No Smoking Day by offering information, advice and support about smoking and smoking cessation.

Objectives:

  • to raise awareness about the day and in turn provide smokers who want to quit with an opportunity to do so;
  • to raise awareness about the health and other benefits of stopping smoking;
  • to involve as many individuals and organisations as possible in activities relating to smoking cessation and education.

Background:
No Smoking Day is an annual UK event for smokers who want to stop smoking. Organised by the charity of the same name, the day combines high profile public relations activity with the mobilisation of local services for smokers.

The campaign is funded and run by an alliance of health promotion bodies, which includes the HPA, as well as professional and voluntary organisations. The HPA supports the campaign by contributing to core UK campaign funding as well as promoting and evaluating the campaign in Northern Ireland.

The campaign:
Each year a new slogan and image are developed for the UK No Smoking Day campaign and used on a range of print and promotional materials. ‘Cut it out’, 'Kiss it goodbye', ‘A day to remember', ‘Sick of smoking?’, ‘For smokers who want out’ and ‘Wake up to No Smoking Day’ were slogans used in the 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 campaigns respectively. For 2006 the campaign slogan is ‘Serious about stopping? You can do it.’

Each year the campaign attracts widespread media attention and many smokers give up smoking on No Smoking Day.

To raise awareness and encourage Northern Ireland smokers to try and stop smoking on No Smoking Day the HPA each year develops an advertising campaign that counts down the days to No Smoking Day. This year’s TV advertisement will be broadcast on UTV from 27 February to 8 March 2006. Further information about No Smoking Day can be found at: www.nosmokingday.org.uk
