Young
people encouraged to get the facts on smoking
The Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland (HPA) launched
a competition today at Hazelwood Integrated College to encourage
young people to log on to www.up-2-you.net to get the facts
on smoking and a chance to win great prizes.
iPod nanos, camera mobile phones and shopping vouchers are
all up for grabs. Anyone under the age of 18 and living in
Northern Ireland can enter the competition by visiting www.up-2-you.net to find the answers to three questions about smoking restrictions
and passive smoking. All correct entries go into a draw for
the prizes. Competition entry cards and posters will be distributed
to schools throughout Northern Ireland over the next few
weeks. The competition can also be entered online.
Cool FM DJ, Sonya Mac, was on hand to help launch the competition,
meet pupils and see if she could find the answers: “I
visited the Up-2-You website and think its great! The answers
are easy to find and there’s lots of really useful
information. If you’re eligible, you should definitely
get clicking to enter the competition – the prizes
sound fab.”
The new section on the website includes an opinion poll
where young people can give their view on whether or not
a smoking ban was the right decision for Northern Ireland.
Ryan Jenkins,
a student at Hazelwood Integrated College, said: “I think the website looks brilliant. I’m
going to enter the competition today and can’t wait
to see if I will win a prize. I’m glad the smoking
ban is coming in here and I’m going to make sure I
put my view on the opinion poll at www.up-2-you.net”
Noreen Campbell,
Principal of Hazelwood Integrated College, said that they
were delighted to host the launch: “We
are really pleased to be involved with the launch of this
important competition as we have a smokefree campus and promote
healthy choices on a daily basis.”
The Up-2-You website
and competition has been produced by the HPA and Chief
Executive, Dr Brian Gaffney said: “This
website is a useful source of health information for young
people and deals with issues such as drugs, alcohol and mental
health as well as smoking and passive smoking. At www.up-2-you.net young people can get the facts they need to help them make
decisions about their lifestyle and find out how their choices
can impact their health.”
The competition entry cards and posters will be delivered
to schools with a letter to Principals from Minister for
Health, Shaun Woodward and Minister for Education, Angela
Smith. The competition is open for entries until 28 February
2006.
