HPA delighted with decision to extend junk food ban in schools
The Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland (HPA) is delighted that the Department of Education has formally announced its intention to extend the strategy of working to improve children’s nutritional health by expanding nutritional standards to all sources of food in schools.
Laura Donnelly, Health Development Officer for Nutrition at the HPA, said: “The HPA has been working with the Department of Education for several years to develop and implement nutritional standards for school meals. The fact that the standards will now be extended to include breakfast clubs, tuck shops, vending machines and other sources of food in schools will make a major contribution in tackling the issue of childhood obesity in Northern Ireland.
“We also welcome the recent appointment of Associate Inspectors which further emphasises the Department of Education’s commitment to ensuring the standards are achieved.”
