Mission: To make health a top priority for everyone in Northern Ireland.

Press Release 04.03.08

HPA and Sport NI sign up to enhancing health with physical activity

The importance of regular physical activity and the benefits of it for maintaining good health and wellbeing are well known and today two key organisations, The Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland (HPA) and Sport Northern Ireland (Sport NI), signed an agreement aimed to promote the significance of physical activity and sport at all levels for the good health and wellbeing of the population.

Speaking about the physical activity charter Dr Brian Gaffney, Chief Executive of the HPA, said: "We welcome the opportunity to further strengthen the partnership which already exists between our organisations. We have similar objectives so it makes good sense that a declaration is signed today which further emphasises our roles in the mission to improve physical activity levels here. Our agreed vision is that we will have a healthy future in which everyone will be motivated to and be supported in their desire and ability to be active."

The charter, The Northern Ireland charter for enhancing health through sport and physical activity, was launched during a seminar organised by Sport NI and the HPA, which enabled delegates to share information on a number of established partnerships. The seminar included presentations focusing on the importance of these, looking at factors which can influence partnerships to make them more successful, as well as making sport the healthy choice. The seminar also included a number of workshops that highlighted other elements such as engaging older people in physical activity and developing a skilled workforce to promote physical activity and sport.

Professor Eamonn McCartan, Chief Executive, Sport NI, said: "Sport Northern Ireland is delighted to have worked in partnership with the Health Promotion Agency on this charter. Both our organisations believe in developing people, especially our young people, and in providing opportunities for people of every age group and ability to be able to participate and enjoy physical activity. In addition to this we both recognise that sport and physical activity contributes to building a healthier nation and together we are committed to the achievement of the objectives laid down in this charter."
