Young people and physical activity group
Involves: This group involves:
-Department for Social Development
(DSD, Belfast Regeneration Office (BRO))
-Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL)
-Department of Education (DE)
-Eastern Health and Social Services Board (EHSSB)
-Health Promotion Agency (HPA)
-Southern Health and Social Services Board (SHSSB)
-Sports Council for Northern Ireland (SCNI)
-Western Education and Library Board (WELB).
Aim: To recommend to NIPAIG priority areas for action linked to the following areas:
  1. To encourage and support schools to enhance opportunities in physical activity for all pupils.
  2. To widen opportunities for physical activity through the development of a safe environment.
  3. To engage parents in the importance of physical activity through raising awareness and educating them of the importance of physical activity.
  4. To equip children with the knowledge of how to become involved in alternative activities of their choosing.
Work: The HPA facilitates this group which is chaired by Mervyn Hill, Creative Studies Advisor with the WELB. The group meets four times a year and has recently contributed to the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) consultation on the new PE & Sports in Schools programme.
