Work:

This forum brings together the major organisations with an interest in cycling and the development of a coordinated approach to increasing cycle use. In June 2000, the forum launched the Northern Ireland cycling strategy, which sets targets to:

  • double the number of trips by cycle (on 2000 figures) by the end of 2005;
  • quadruple the the number of trips by cycle (on 2000 figures) by the end of 2015.

The strategy proposes the introduction of a range of measures to improve conditions for cyclists and to make this form of travel a more attractive option. The HPA provides expertise on health and physical activity issues to this group as well as policy advice on the Northern Ireland Physical activity strategy's activities. Dr Brian Gaffney, Chief Executive, HPA, is chair of the strategy's Communication Strategy Subgroup.
