Background to the Health Promoting Schools database:
sharing practice

All schools participating in the Health Promoting Schools initiative were assisted and supported by local coordinators through a recognised Health Promoting School process. This process was based on self-evaluation of ‘school improvement’ principles that form the basis of assuring quality of a school’s planning and provision of educational opportunities. This same process was recommended to assist schools meet the established criteria and indicators for a health promoting school.

Setting up a Health Promoting School Team was central to coordinating this process, so it was important that a range of people were represented. These included teaching and non-teaching staff, governors, parents/carers, pupils, health and social care professionals, and representatives from other statutory, voluntary and community agencies.

The schools were required to complete a whole school self-evaluation against the eight criteria which were developed as the benchmark for the health promoting school. Strengths and areas for improvement were identified. Realistic actions for improvement, with a timescale and achievement criteria were then prioritised in their School Development Plans.

Schools have been encouraged to share their experience of this process, ideas and practice, by submitting a case study pro-forma. It is essential that any school identifies its own priorities for action and its own means of achieving the desired outcomes. The diversity of styles and approaches of health promoting schools, is highlighted in the case study database”, which gives examples of the activities of a health promoting school.

The information included in the case studies is provided by the respondents, all of whom have achieved the Local Recognition Certificate. While the database has been compiled by the HPA, the inclusion of these case studies does not signify endorsement. Every effort has been made to ensure that this information is accurate, however, no responsibility (legal or otherwise) is accepted by the HPA for any errors, omissions or otherwise.
