April 2005 the Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland
(HPA)
gathered information to aid the development of a support
programme, ‘A Healthy Service – supporting
health in hospitals’, and to establish a knowledge
base of current health improvement/promotion initiatives
in hospitals across Northern Ireland.
It is
important to note that it was not the intention of the
HPA to identify every initiative in Northern Ireland, with
the data collection being dependent on self-selection and
not on a restrictive representative sample. It is also
important to note that this information will be updated
until the end of March 2006.
The descriptions
of the projects included in this database are those of
the respondents. While this database has been compiled
by the HPA, the inclusion of initiatives does not signify
endorsement. Every effort has been made to ensure that
this information is accurate, however, no responsibility
(legal or otherwise) is accepted by the HPA for any errors,
omissions or otherwise.
This
database identifies a range of health improvement initiatives,
activities and projects that are being undertaken for patients,
staff, visitors and the wider community in the hospitals
setting relating to the following:
- Organisational
management:
health improvement/promotion policies or initiatives
which are an integral part of an organisation’s
quality management system.
- Quality
of life improvement:
initiatives to support patient treatment, to improve
prognosis and promote patients’ health and wellbeing.
- Patient
information and empowerment:
initiatives that ensure patients are informed about
planned activities that enable them to participate
actively in such activities, and that facilitate integration
of health improvement/promotion initiatives in all
patient care.
- Promoting
a healthy workplace:
policies or initiatives that support a healthy and
safe environment for staff, or promote staff health
and wellbeing.
- Working
in partnership or collaboration with others:
initiatives involving other health service facilities,
voluntary organisations or non-HPSS bodies, or multi-professional
groups within an organisation.
This
searchable database of initiatives is the perfect opportunitiy
to share this vast amount of knowledge and experience and
to disseminate it widely to all those interested in health
improvement/promotion in the hospital setting.
