| Smokers
urged: Prepare to give up for good on No Smoking Day
Today marks the
start of the Health Promotion Agency’s television advertising
campaign to remind smokers that Wednesday, 12 March is No
Smoking Day.
This is
the 20th anniversary of No Smoking Day, which over the last
two decades has helped thousands of smokers to quit.
Rob Phipps,
Senior Manager at the Health Promotion Agency for Northern
Ireland explained:
“Over three thousand calls were made to the Smokers’
Helpline during its first two months showing there is a tremendous
desire to stub out the habit. No Smoking Day provides an excellent
opportunity for smokers to set a date to quit.
“We
are urging smokers to start preparing now so they are ready
to stop on No Smoking Day. Research shows that smokers who
prepare themselves mentally to stop smoking for good are more
likely to succeed.”
The countdown
advertising campaign for No Smoking Day also promotes the
Smokers’ Helpline 0800 858585, which
people can call for advice and support as they try to give
up.
