Health protection

The HPA has been regularly commissioned by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) to develop and produce a range of resources for health professionals and members of the public to support its childhood and adult immunisation programmes. These ongoing programmes aim to protect the health of the public by providing a range of safe and effective vaccines against many dangerous childhood diseases and against influenza among older people, and those in the 'at risk' group.

More recently the HPA has been asked to extend this work to include adult screening programmes. These programmes aim to detect a range of diseases and pre-disease conditions before symptoms appear or before the patient presents with the diseases.

The HPA also contributes to the implementation of the DHSSPS’s Antimicrobial Resistance Action Plan (AMRAP). We have developed and produced material in support of a public information campaign to highlight two priority action areas in AMRAP – prudent antimicrobial (antibiotic) use in humans in the community, and infection control through hand washing.

s Antenatal screening

Antibiotics

i Breast screening

s Flu

Hand washing

Healthcare associated infection (HAI)

s Hepatitis C

Health protection for children, which includes information on immunisation, can be found under the Parents and children section of this website.
