Antenatal screening
forms part of routine maternity care. The range of tests now
available aims to safeguard the health of the mother and her
baby by detecting a range of conditions or diseases such as
hepatitis B, syphilis, rubella and HIV. It also checks the
blood/haemoglobin count and the blood group.
In order to inform
pregnant women about these tests and their purpose, the Department
of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) commissioned
the Agency to develop an information leaflet for expectant
mothers. This range of six tests was introduced in antenatal clinics across Northern Ireland in a phased approach from October 2002. They have been available to all pregnant women as part of their maternity care from April 2003.
