Description:
This discussion
document seeks to examines how the cross-cutting theme of
sustainable development can be integrated into the objectives
and policies set out in the Executive's Programme
for Government.
While recognising
that central and local Government has a large part to play
in this process, the cooperation of others including the business,
voluntary and community sectors, as well as that of individuals
is acknowledged.
The work of local
councils under the Local Agenda 21 programme established at
Rio and the Local Strategy Partnerships being set up to undertake
integrated development planning under the EU Peace II Programme,
is particularly highlighted as a potential model for the delivery
of sustainable development.
A wide range
of groups were invited to contribute to this consultation
process, which ended on 30 September 2002.
