and tuberculosis. Be wise - immunise
BCG and tuberculosis. Be wise - immunise.
HPA, August 2003.
First published in February 2002 on
behalf of the Department of Health, Social Services and Public
Safety, (DHSSPS). A revised version was reprinted in August
2003. This leaflet has been withdrawn to support a change
to the routine childhood immunisation programme, which no
longer includes BCG vaccine against tuberculosis for 10 to
14 year olds. This will be replaced by a new vaccination
programme targeted at ‘neonatal and others at risk’.
This leaflet explains what tuberculosis is, what BCG means and
why this vaccine is important. It provides information on when
the vaccine is given, how tuberculosis is spread and how many
cases are reported in Northern Ireland each year. It also explains
how the tuberculin/heaf test determines who needs to be immunised
and what happens after immunisation.
