Description:
This leaflet explains what folic acid is and how it can help to protect the unborn child against conditions such as spina bifida. This is one of the neural tube defects (NTDs) that can occur when the baby's spine or brain do not develop in the normal way. The leaflet explains who is at risk from having a baby with a NTD, how to get the right amount of folic acid and when they should start taking extra folic acid.
