Understanding concepts for working with children and
young people

Published:
HPA, April 2008
Author:
Simon Ward, Senior Educational Psychologist with the Children, Schools and Families Service in Sefton, England.

Description:
This key issue paper focuses on some of the key concepts, models and research themes that form the latest theoretical frameworks in the field of positive mental health. The paper suggests that these concepts are vital to understanding children's and young people's mental health, and essential for positively developing it.

It is one of three papers relating to a series of seminars concerning young people's mental and emotional health, organised and presented by the Design for Living partnership in 2007. The partnership comprises Action Mental Health, the Youth Council for Northern Ireland and the Health Promotion Agency for Northern Ireland. Through its annual programme of seminars the partnership aims to promote and protect young people's mental and emotional health and build capacity among practitioners from the many disciplines who work with young people in Northern Ireland.
