Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Health Promotion and Population Health

Aims of the programme

The Health Promotion Specialist course option seeks to prepare students from a wide variety of backgrounds for specialist roles within the expanding field of health promotion, either as health promotion specialists or expert health promoters.

Content and Structure

The course in Jordanstown focuses on promoting the health of the public; planning for population health; advanced methods in health and social care research; epidemiology for population health; evidence informed healthcare; writing a research proposal; society, policy and population health and leadership and management in promoting the public’s health.

The Education and Youth Sector course option in Monaghan (part-time only) seeks to prepare students from the education and youth sectors for leadership roles in health promotion in schools, colleges and youth settings. The course focuses on health and its promotion; health promotion curriculum and project planning; advanced methods in health and social care research and leadership and management in the settings environment.

Location and Duration

Jordanstown Campus (full-time and part-time), Monaghan Education Centre (part-time only).

  • Full-time
    Postgraduate Diploma – two semesters. Attendance is two half days per week.
    MSc – an additional semester.

  • Part-time
    Postgraduate Diploma – 18 months minimum; 48 months maximum. Attendance is on one half day per week for the Health Promotion Specialist Option and one evening per week for the Education and Youth Sector option.
    MSc - an additional academic year minimum; two additional academic years maximum.

Professional Recognition

The Health Promotion Specialist option course is recognised by the Society of Health Education and Promotion Specialists as the basic professional qualification of the Health Promotion Specialist.

Entry Requirements

  • Students who hold a primary degree or equivalent in a subject relevant to health promotion, population health or public health from an institution recognised by the University (applicants who are unsure should contact the Course Director in the first instance).

  • Applicants who possess a qualification other than that listed above, but who have at least two years’ full-time equivalent experience as a health promotion or public health specialist or as an expert health promoter (one whose full time is spent in leadership and management and programme delivery of health promotion in a defined professional area) may be admitted to the course subject, where necessary, to bridging work being undertaken.

  • All applications will be considered in light of the supporting statement and will be subject to satisfactory references. Applicants may, at the discretion of the University, be asked to attend for interview.

  • To progress to the MSc, an overall mark of at least 50% in the Postgraduate Diploma is required.

  • Applicants already holding a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Promotion from the University or other recognised institution may, at the discretion of the Course Committee, be admitted directly to the MSc following the successful completion of an acceptable research proposal.
