The Countrywide
Integrated Noncommunicable Diseases Intervention (CINDI)
Programme is a major initiative of the World Health
Organization (WHO) for its European Region. Northern Ireland
is one of two UK ‘demonstration areas’ for the
CINDI Programme – the other area being Merseyside,
whose programme is coordinated by the Heart of Mersey Campaign.
(See http://www.heartofmersey.org.uk for more information.)
The
29 participating countries making up the CINDI network
(28 Member States of the WHO European Region and Canada)
share information and work cooperatively to promote healthier
lifestyles and to tackle noncommunicable diseases (NCD)
risk
factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol misuse,
physical inactivity and psychosocial stress.
Each
year the HPA publishes CINDI Highlights as part of its
commitment to supporting this WHO work. This publication
reports on the work taking place throughout the participating
countries belonging to the network to prevent NCD such
as
heart disease, cancer and respiratory diseases. For
further information on CINDI go to the website of the World
Health Organization's Regional Office for Europe:
